Orphans

According to UNICEF there were 1.6 million orphaned children under the age 17 in 2009 in Myanmar. By many estimates that number may exceed 1.9 million 2013.

The biggest single source for healthcare, education, nutrition, and a safe place to belong for these children are Buddhist monasteries. Though there are no accurate numbers available, some estimates put the annual percentage of orphaned children taken into the Buddhist monastic system as high as 85%.

These are a few of those children.

Update: Some of these images are being featured in an exhibit at Umbrella Arts Gallery in NYC during the month of December.
